Two Lessons Pain Taught Me

career coaching Dec 10, 2020

Pain comes in all forms.

Physical.

Mental.

Emotional.

Relational.

We create a lot of this pain with our minds. If you don't believe me, keep reading.

Lesson 1

On September 30, I found myself in so much physical pain that I didn't think I would stay conscious while my husband drove me to the hospital, so I made the decision to call an ambulance.

This physical pain was on a new level. It was excruciating.

All I wanted was to be out of pain as fast as possible.

Ever been there? ✋🏼

While I couldn't control the pain and my body's reaction to it, I was able to control my mind.

"My poor body," I said out loud in the back of the ambulance.

I found it interesting that my mind had empathy for my body.

Let's be real, though, before my mind went to empathy, I let out one solid F word and also stated, "This is so dumb!" because I was so frustrated that I couldn't control my body's reaction to whatever was happening.

Then my my mind quickly shifted from empathy to gratitude.

Gratitude for the paramedics, for medicine they gave me to dull the pain, for hospital I was headed and all their fancy gadgets that would be able to figure out what's going on, and for all amazing people there who would offer care.

After I got back home, I counted... at least 8 people helped me during this experience. Amazing.

I'm grateful, on a whole new level, for those called to take care of others during an emergency. But, also, that we are all called to do unique and specific work.

Lesson 2

In Part 1 of my six-figure club story, I shared that I had become disengaged at work and how that led to disillusionment.

That was a mentally and emotionally painful time for me.

The kicker?

I was the one creating it.

I was blaming my circumstances for what I thought and felt, for the actions I was taking, and for the results I was getting.

And, I wasn't the only one in pain. It was painful for my husband and my manager at work, too.

They both wanted to help me out of it.

But, this was the kind of pain that no one could help me out of. And, I wasn't getting out of it until I was good and ready.

So, today, I have two questions for you:

☝🏼 What is your unique and specific calling?
✌🏼 And, are you good and ready to get started OR to take it to the next level?

If you are, let's talk. I genuinely want to help you.
